God is light, pure light;

there's not a trace of darkness in him.

1 John 1:5

GOD IS LIGHT

The Emperor Trojan said to Rabbi Joshua,

“ You teach that your God is everywhere. I should like to see Him”

To which the Rabbi replied:

“ God’s presence is everywhere, but He cannot be seen. No mortal eye can behold his Glory “

The Emperor insisted, however, and so the Rabbi said:

“ Let us begin by first looking at one of His servants “.

The Emperor consented to this, and so followed the Rabbi out into the open air.

“ Now, “ said the Rabbi, “Look up into the clear blue sky and gaze directly into the splendour of the sun.”

“ I cannot “ said the Emperor, ‘ The light dazzles me and hurts my eyes.”

And so the Rabbi responded:

“ You are unable to endure even for one moment the light of one of His servants? How, then, can you expect to behold the eternal Glory of the Creator? Would not such a Light destroy you?

In effect, there is no other way to know God,

than by the vision (qewri/aj) of the Light

which comes from Him.
